Born in Detroit, MI, Kelly J's love for music and the arts started at a young age, but it wasn't until she moved to Las Vegas, NV that she desired to pursue Djing as a career. At the age of 18, Kelly J went to the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, and majored in Nursing right after graduating high school, but also became an intern for 88.1 FM KCEP. "Working there reminded me of WJLB back home, it reminded me of why I loved radio so much. I always wanted to be a part of the movement that creates a positive atmosphere for people.
At the age of 19, she obtained a position for XRadio.Biz, an online radio station, one of the first of its kind at the time, as an on-air personality and staff producer. After researching, interviewing, and becoming a fan of many independent artists, carrying previous DJ skills from 88.1 to this new format, as well as expanding her knowledge of the DJ culture, Kelly J went on to DJ in many nightclubs, festivals, venues, and various radio stations across the world.
Notable radio stations that she's worked for include Sirius XM Shade 45, Sirius XM Fly 47, Dash Radio, 88.1 FM Las Vegas, 97.5 FM Las Vegas, 100.5 FM Las Vegas, and 103.9 FM Las Vegas. Notable clients of hers include NIke, Footlocker, Ashley Furniture, NBA Summer League, Hoop Bus, Under Armour, Jardin, BET, Champs, LiveNation, the Las Vegas Aces, 100 Black Men, Cookies, Clark County, and Lionsgate.
In December 2015, Kelly J became a Core DJ, holding the name and reputation of fellow Core DJs Big Tigger, Nick Cannon, and CEO, Tony Neal.
In May of 2021, Kelly J gained the new role of DJ Workshop Instructor at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, creating an open and professional learning space for the next generation of DJs.
Her focus has always been positively impacting people, not necessarily one style of music, as the art of music creates endless opportunities to do so. Because of this, Kelly J's musical style is very versatile, allowing her to be received and remembered in any room.
